(2) Angelique Kerber vs (Q) Francesca Schiavone
Angelique Kerber arrives in Antwerp on a high after helping guide Germany to the semi-finals of the Fed Cup with a 3-1 victory over Australia in Stuttgart. After receiving a bye through the first round, Angie faces the veteran qualifier, Francesca Schiavone in the second round.
Angelique Kerber has had a Rollercoaster start to her 2015 season. The season started off well for Angie, reaching the quarter-finals in Brisbane and the semi-finals in Sydney. However Angie would suffer a bitterly disappointing loss to Irina-Camelia Begu in the opening round at the Australian Open.
Angie succumbed to a shock first up loss to Jarmila Gajdosova in the opening rubber of Germany’s Fed Cup tie with Australia. Angie would rebound strongly in the reverse singles rubber against Sam Stosur, prevailing in straight sets to give Germany a critical 2-1 lead.
It’s hard to know which Angie will show up in Antwerp this week. If Angie brings her best she is a good chance to claim her first title of the season.
After suffering three consecutive first round losses to start the season, Francesca Schiavone has turned her form around in Antwerp.
The Italian cruised through qualifiers without dropping a set before defeating Klara Koukalova 6-3 6-1 in the opening round. Schiavone will fancy her chances of causing an upset against Angie.
Schiavone holds a 2-1 head to head record over the German. However it was Angie who prevailed in their most recent encounter, a hard-fought 6-7 6-3 6-2 victory at the 2013 Miami event.
It’s hard to see Schiavone causing an upset here, however it should be a close match.
