Garbine Muguruza vs Jelena Jankovic, Dubai R2 Preview

Garbine Muguruza vs (12) Jelena Jankovic

Spanish rising star, Garbine Muguruza is set to face twelfth seed, Jelena Jankovic in the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Tuesday.

Garbine Muguruza advanced to the second round in Dubai with a bizarre 3-6 6-1 6-2 victory over Jarmila Gajdosova. Garbine was slow out of the blocks, looking quite flat and disinterested throughout the opening set. Jarmila was good enough to take advantage, serving her way to a one set lead. At the sit down after the first set, Garbine was clearly distressed, bowing her head down and crying into her towel.

The Spaniard managed to turn things around in the second set, breaking Jarka in the very first game of the set before going on to win four straight games to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The third set was more of the same, Garbine captured an early break and never really looked troubled on serve until the very last game. Serving for the match at 5-2 Garbine found herself down 0-40 but impressively managed to win five straight points to secure her spot in the second round.

Garbine was once again in tears after the match, something clearly bothering her. Her movement was fine, It’s unlikely to be anything physical. It was a very mature performance from the Spaniard, something was clearly bothering Garbine and she was far from her best ,however she still managed to come from a set down against a tricky, in form opponent.

After a disastrous start to the season, Jelena Jankovic finally captured her first victory of 2015 with a 6-3 4-6 6-1 win over Timea Babos. Jankovic had an injury interrupted pre-season and has been very slow to get going in 2014, prompting some to suggest that it may be time for the Serb to retire. Jankovic has fallen outside the top 20 and is in danger of dropping even lower if she doesn’t turn things around quickly.

These two have met on two previous occasions, both claiming one victory apiece. It was Garbine Muguruza who prevailed in their most recent encounter, an impressive 7-6 6-4 victory in Tokyo last year. Jelena’s victory came back in 2013 at the french Open, a comfortable 6-3 6-0 win.

The Serb has done nothing this year to suggest that she is capable of defeating a quality opponent such as Garbine. Despite Muguruza looking jaded throughout her first round victory in Dubai, I think she will prove to be too strong for Jelena on this occasion. At this moment in time, Garbine is on the rise whilst Jelena is on the slide.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Jelena Jankovic in 2 sets
