(1) Petra Kvitova vs (9) Carla Suarez Navarro
Petra Kvitova’s quest for her first title in Doha continues on Thursday when she comes up against her recent nemesis, Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Total Open. Carla has defeated Petra twice in a row, including last week in Dubai. Petra will be desperate for revenge in this match and will come out firing.
The number one seed received a bye through to the second round before defeating Jelena Jankovic 6-3 1-1 when the Serb was forced to retire due to an injury. Petra did play some good tennis in the opening set, but will need to play much better if she is to reverse her recent poor results against Carla.
Petra made it quite clear in her post match interview that she is looking forward to a rematch with Carla, stating that she was desperate for ‘revenge’ and that she ‘didn’t play her best tennis’ in their last encounter. Petra hopes she can play much better this time around and avoid a third consecutive loss to the Spaniard.
Carla Suarez Navarro is one of the form players on the tour right now. The Spaniard defeated Karolina Pliskova 7-6 6-4 to reach her third consecutive quarter-final in as many weeks. Carla came agonizingly close to winning the biggest title of her career in Antwerp a couple of weeks ago but was unable to take part in the final due to a neck injury.
Carla has put that disappointment behind her with a positive set of results in the past couple of weeks. Carla defeated Camila Giorgi and Petra Kvitova on route to the quarter-finals in Dubai, before succumbing to Garbine Muguruza in a tight three setter. The Spaniard will have her work cut out progressing any further this week, a determined Petra Kvitova is a scary prospect.
Petra Kvitova has a 5-3 head to head record over Carla, however it is Carla who has won their two most recent encounters. Carla has stunned Petra two years in a row in Dubai, winning in three sets on both occasions. A strange set of results, especially since the fast conditions in the middle east should really help Kvitova in this matchup.
Petra Kvitova will be pumped up for this match, it’s extremely difficult to picture anything but a victory for Petra on this occasion. Petra clearly wasn’t at her best last week in Dubai, the hot conditions during the day favoured Carla, this time the two will play under the lights which will certainly favour Petra. I think Petra will make a statement in this match and win quite comfortably.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro in 2 sets
