Wimbledon R3: (5) Caroline Wozniacki vs (31) Camila Giorgi
One of the most intriguing third round matches at the All England Club sees a massive contrast in game styles go head to head when Caroline Wozniacki takes on Camila Giorgi.
These two have had some tough battles in the past, Giorgi actually comes into this match with a positive head to head record against the former world number 1.
Caroline Wozniacki has reached the third round without dropping a set. The Dane overcame an early challenge to defeat Saisai Zheng 7-5 6-0 in her opening match before overcoming a late scare to defeat Denisa Allertova 6-1 7-6. Wozniacki had a 5-1 lead against Allertova and was seemingly cruising to victory, however the Dane would drop the next 5 games, recovering to take the set in a tiebreaker.
Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam that Wozniacki is yet to reach the quarter-finals, however the Dane maintains that she feels comfortable playing on the grass, having won in Eastbourne and winning a junior Wimbledon title.
Camila Giorgi has also advanced to the third round without dropping a set. The explosive Italian has also been challenged in a couple of sets. Giorgi defeated Teliana Pereira 7-6 6-3 in the opening round before overcoming Lara Arruabarrena 6-0 7-6 to set up a third round clash with Wozniacki.
Giorgi hasn’t served well in her opening two matches, hitting a combined 4 aces and 19 double faults. The Italian will need to serve much better if she is to challenge Wozniacki on Saturday. Giorgi has shown that she can turn her game on at any time. Giorgi served poorly on her run to the final at s-Hertogenbosch a couple of weeks ago but produced a stunning serving performance in the final to claim her first WTA title with a win over Belinda Bencic.
Camila Giorgi holds a 2-1 head to head record over Caroline Wozniacki. Giorgi has won both their hard court encounters, stunning Wozniacki at the 2013 US Open and thumping the Dane 6-4 6-2 in New Haven last year in what was their most recent clash. Wozniacki won their only previous match on a grass court, triumphing 6-7 6-4 6-2 in an epic at Eastbourne last year.
This is an extremely tough match to call, it’s impossible to know what kind of tennis Giorgi will produce. The match will be on Giorgi’s racquet, we know that she has the game to beat Wozniacki. I’m going to side with Giorgi here, she will go into this match full of confidence and belief, knowing she can win and knowing exactly what she has to do to win.
Prediction: Camila Giorgi to defeat Caroline Wozniacki in 3 sets
