Agnieszka Radwanska vs Timea Bacsinszky, Miami R4 Preview

Miami R4: (2) Agnieszka Radwanska vs (19) Timea Bacsinszky

An interesting fourth round clash at the Miami Open sees an in form Aga Radwanska come up against a resurgent Timea Bacsinszky. Radwanska and Bacsinszky both rely on their variety and defensive skills to disrupt their opponents meaning this is likely to be a long, tough match between two like-minded players. Interestingly, it was Bacsinszky who smashed Radwanska 6-1 6-1 in their only previous clash during the Fed Cup early last year.

Aga has continued her impressive start to the season at the Miami Open. The former champion has hardly put a foot wrong in her opening two matches at the event, conceding a total of 6 games on route to recording straight set wins over Alize Cornet and Madison Brengle. Radwanska continues to adopt a more aggressive mindset, coming forward to the net whenever there is a slight opportunity and even serve and volleying on a couple of occasions in her opening round matches. An aggressive mindset will be important heading into Agaโ€™s fourth round clash with Bacsinszky, an opponent that defends very well but can also be dangerous when allowed to dictate play.

Timea Bacsinszky is finally starting to find her range after a difficult start to the season. Timea failed to win back-to-back matches in her first three events of the season but has now won consecutive matches in her last three events. Timea has progressed to the fourth round in Miami without dropping a set, recording impressive straight set wins over two quality opponents: Margarita Gasparyan and Ana Ivanovic. Bacsinszky will be confident heading into her fourth round clash with Radwanska given her dominant win over the Pole in their only previous encounter.

Bacsinszky stunned Radwanska in their only previous meeting, picking up an emphatic 6-1 6-1 win in a crucial Fed Cup tie early last season. Radwanska played really poorly in that match whilst Bacsinszky did little wrong. Radwanskaโ€™s form is dramatically improved heading into this clash and a very different scoreline is to be expected on this occasion.

There is no real reason to suggest that this will not be an extremely close match. These two play quite similarly. but Radwanska certainly has a few more strings to her bow. Aga is more comfortable coming forward to the net (which is generally important in a match-up like this) and is also generally a little more solid from the baseline. Timea has looked much better in the last couple of weeks but Agaโ€™s recent form has been great and I suspect she will find a way to get the win here.

Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Timea Bacsinszky in 3 sets

  1. In the first meeting, Timea Basc demolished Aga in front of her home crowds. This match will be tighter than the first one for sure.

Aga did struggle in her previous match, but Brengle couldn’t hold her serves after breaking Aga’s serves. Timea Basc is a very smart tennis player. With Aga having minor thigh issues (according to rumours!!) or even without this issue, I see an upset alert here. I see a closer scoreline than their first meeting but the winner remains the same. Please bear in mind that Timea Basc is in form.

A three setter but you need to structure your bet to win. Good luck all.

    1. It would be a huge effort if Timea is to win this or even come very close tbh… Aga is in great form and I’m thinking she is fine physically… We will see

      1. Timea is also in great form. Aga…not sure about form. She struggled in Miami though she won because of her weak opponents. If someone could beat her in front of her home crowd in 2 easy sets. It said something about this match. It won’t be easy for both but Timea has a shot again. I see upset alert here.

Remember that NO One is Unbeatable.

        1. Yes she is far from unbeatable but I would consider it a huge upset if Timea were to win. I think Aga’s form is very good…

          1. How can it be a huge upset when Timea already defeated her in 2 easy sets in Poland?

Aga did struggle in her previous matches though the scorelines showed easy wins. If Brengle could hold her serves, she might even win. She has broken Aga first.

Anyway, I love the underdog chance.

          2. It’s obviously a huge upset, I’m not going to explain that because it’s obvious. That’s fine, you can have your opinion… I would be quite shocked to see Aga lose but we will see…

    1. Aga was going through a form slump at that stage… Different circumstances, different conditions… Completely different match

  2. I have a strong feeling that Timea’s going to win. The way she played against Ana was unbelievable. Im aware that beating Ana these days isnt a big deal, but the way she did it was very impressive. Hitting with accuracy amd consistency all game long. That’s the old Timea of last year. Condition here is suiting her game.
Aga is really tough to beat but if Timea plays at the same level as she did against Ivanovic. Im convinced she is going to win in 2.

    1. Playing Ivanovic and playing Radwanska is VERY different… But yes her backhand was particularly impressive against Ana. I think it will be competitive but Aga should be too good in the end

  3. Yes complete opposite of style and tools. But Ivanovic was playing at a very high level too (been a while i havent see her playing like that). Timea was just too good in every facet of the game.
Going against Aga today will be tough but like Jocas im wondering if she is at 100%. She looked fragile against Brengle. I mean its not a big deal to have some moment off but i dont think she can afford to have some today.

Also loving Murguruza and Makarova today btw

    1. I actually like Svitolina’s chances despite h2h form and I agree I think Garbine can win interesting day of tennis

  4. Makarova find her groove against Kvitova. I think she needed a kind of win like that to get her confidence back. If she is hitting the ball well, she will overpower Svitolina pretty easily.
