2016 Olympic Games, Rio de Janeiro R3 Preview 🇧🇷
(3) 🇪🇸 Garbine Muguruza vs 🇵🇷 Monica Puig
Garbine Muguruza looms as one of the favourites to claim gold in Rio. The Spaniard has made a strong start to her first Olympic campaign with a couple of straight set wins and will look to continue that strong form on Wednesday when she takes on Monica Puig.
Muguruza was relatively untroubled in her Olympics singles debut, the Spaniard claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win over Andreea Mitu before thumping Nao Hibino 6-1 6-1 in just 57 minutes. The slow had court surface in Rio are a surface that Muguruza can thrive on, the Spaniard is one of few players that has the weapons to hit through the surface and has generally played her best tennis on a slower surface throughout her career, most notably on the clay at Roland Garros.
Monica Puig has also made a successful start to her first ever Olympic campaign. Puig claimed a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win over Polona Hercog in the opening round before winning with the exact same scoreline of 6-3 6-2 this time over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, an impressive win.
This will be the first career meeting between Muguruza and Puig. This should be a fairly competitive match, certainly the biggest test for both in Rio thus far. The dead courts in Rio play well for both Muguruza and Puig, in fact Muguruza and Puig are similar players in many ways but ultimately Muguruza can be seen as a better version of Puig and therefore she should be too good here.
