Miami Open, 🇺🇸🌴🐬 R1 Match Preview
🇺🇸 Christina McHale vs 🇩🇪 Annika Beck
Christina McHale and Annika Beck will go head-to-head for the very first time when they meet at the opening round stage of the Miami Open. Both McHale and Beck have been hovering around number 50 in the rankings for a while and both will be looking to make the next step during the 2017 season. Matches like these are critical for both ladies, making this match a high-stake affair.
Christina McHale has been inconsistent in 2017, surprisingly inconsistent for a player with such a solid game style. McHale arrives in Miami on the back of her worst performance of the year. The American was thrashed by Evgeniya Rodina 6-1 6-0 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open. Interestingly, McHale was also beaten in the first round at the Australian Open this year, so McHale has performed well below par at the two biggest events of the season thus far, adding extra importance to the week in Miami for McHale.
Annika beck has also struggled to make an impact at the biggest events in 2017. However, the German did record her biggest win of the year last tournament in Indian Wells when she upset Eugenie Bouchard in the first round, from a set down. Beck was unable to extend her stay at the BNP Paribas Open for long as she was defeated by Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets in the next round.
This is a tough match to call, especially given these two have never come up against each other before. I think McHale should have the slight edge in this match-up. Both ladies are good movers around the court, particularly Beck, However, McHale has more firepower at her disposal, and a greater willingness to attack. McHale is a patient player and should be good enough to find a way past the defensive skills of Beck.
