WTA Aegon Classic, 🇬🇧 Birmingham R2 Preview
(4) 🇬🇧 Johanna Konta vs 🇺🇸 CoCo Vandeweghe
An intriguing second round clash in Birmingham sees two of the best servers on tour go head-to-head, Johanna Konta and CoCo Vandeweghe. Expect long rallies to be few and far between when these two collide in a match that features two of the most aggressive players on tour. If Vandeweghe can bring her best, she is good enough to beat anyone on this surface but it is Konta who is the far more consistent player which will make her tough for the American to handle. This should be an exciting encounter between two of the most dangerous players on a grass court looking to build momentum before Wimbledon.
Johanna Konta made a solid start to the grass court swing last week in Nottingham where she reached the final. The week did end in disappointment for Konta as her three set loss to Donna Vekic was a match should would expected to have won. Konta quickly brushed aside the disappointment from Nottingham as she battled past Lesia Tsurenko 6-3 7-6. Konta was in troubled in the second set but was too good when it mattered most, it was a good straight set win for the Brit after coming through a good late test.
CoCo Vandeweghe made a bold move prior to the grass court swing as she hired Pat Cash to be her coach. The American made a disappointing start under the guidance of Cash as she lost to Carina Witthoeft 7-6 3-6 5-7 in the opening round in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Vandeweghe made a much more confident start in Birmingham, defeating Christina McHale 6-4 6-2 to set up a blockbuster clash with Johana Konta.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair at a tour level event. This match will be decided by a few points here and there, breaks of serve are likely to be far more decisive than usual on the WTA tour. The edge has to go to Konta because of her greater consistency both from the service line and particularly from the baseline. Konta is in better form at the moment and probably be the more solid when things get tight.
