Aegon International, 🇬🇧 Eastbourne R3 Preview
(5) 🇬🇧 Johanna Konta vs (10) 🇱🇻 Jelena Ostapenko
Jelena Ostapenko made a solid return to competitive actions in her first match since her outstanding Roland Garros triumph. The Latvian overcame Suarez Navarro in a topsy-turvy three set match and will now face a much greater test when she comes up against Johanna Konta in the third round at the Aegon International on Thursday. This has the making of an intriguing contest if both bring their a-game.
Johanna Konta got off to a great start in Eastbourne on Wednesday, the Brit claimed a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 win over Sorana Cirstea. Expectations are high for Konta on grass this year, thus far she has not really found her best, a disappointing loss to Vekic in the final in Nottingham and a thrashing at the hands of Vandeweghe early in Birmingham last week highlight that. Konta will be hoping for a better week in Eastbourne as she looks to build momentum before heading to SW19.
The eyes of the tennis world remain on Jelena Ostapenko, to see how the young Latvian handles herself after her incredible achievement at Roland Garros. Ostapenko got off to a typically erratic start in Eastbourne, Ostapenko defeated Suarez Navarro 6-3 0-6 6-4. Ostapenko will need to produce a more consistent performance if she is navigate past Konta and progress further in Eastbourne.
This will be the first career meeting between Konta and Ostapenko. It will be interesting to see how these two match-up against each other. I suspect Konta will be too strong here, Konta is generally far more consistent. Ostapenko can’t afford wayward moments in this match-up, I suspect there will be too many dips in her level on this occasion.
