Connecticut Open, 🇺🇸🏫 New Haven preview + prediction
R2: (Q) 🇵🇱 Magda Linette vs 🇨🇳 Shuai Zhang
Shuai Zhang caused the biggest upset of the opening round when she eliminated 3-time former champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets. Zhang claimed a surprisingly easy 6-2 6-1 win over Petra Kvitova on Monday night and will look to bring momentum from that big win into her second round clash with Magda Linette on Wednesday. In more good news for Zhang, she holds a perfect 2-0 head-to-head record over Linette heading into this second round clash at the Connecticut Open.
Magda Linette also claimed an upset win to progress to the second round in New Haven, albeit a minor one. Linette came through three matches to progress through the qualifying draw before she claimed a surprisingly straightforward 6-3 6-1 win over Roberta Vinci. Linette’s win over Vinci was her first MD win since Nottingham.
As mentioned above, Zhang has won both of the previous matches between the pair, a 6-2 2-6 6-1 win in Kuala Lumpur in 2014 and more recently a 7-5 7-5 victory in Birmingham earlier this year. I suspect Zhang will again get the better of Linette on this occasion. These two are quite similar in a few ways but it is Zhang who has more to her game and is able to effectively counter-punch against Linette. Zhang’s win over Kvitova was impressive, Kvitova wasn’t playing too well but Zhang did absolutely nothing wrong and can build off that win.
