US Open, 🇺🇸🍎🗽🚕 R3 Preview + Prediction
(10) 🇵🇱 Agnieszka Radwanska vs (20) 🇺🇸 CoCo Vandeweghe
CoCo Vandeweghe will get another shot at Agnieszka Radwanska when they collide at the third round stage at Flushing Meadows on Saturday. Radwanska has a dominant head-to-head record over Vandeweghe having won 5 of their previous 6 matches, all 5 victories were on a hard court. Despite their previous matches, Vandeweghe does have the weapons to trouble Radwanska, the conditions in New York are also probably more favourable for Vandeweghe whilst Radwanska has generally struggled at the U.S Open.
Radwanska has done well enough to move into the third round without dropping a set. The 10th seed started the event with a 6-4 7-6 win over Petra Martic before fighting off a strong early test to beat Yulia Putintseva 7-5 6-2. Vandeweghe got off to a much rockier start, coming from a set down and a break down in the final set to beat Alison Riske 2-6 6-3 6-4. Vandeweghe produced a more consistent performance in the second round to defeat Ons Jabeur 7-6 6-2, Vandeweghe’s serve was not broken the entire match.
Radwanska easily accounted for Vandeweghe in their most recent match, a 6-3 6-2 win at the Rogers Cup. I’m going to side with Vandeweghe here despite the head-to-head record. This is a match-up where Vandeweghe should actually be doing well, especially in these conditions. The American has all the weapons to dispose of the Pole and will draw on the home crowd support for extra energy. If Vandeweghe serves well and keeps her unforced errors to reasonably low number, she will win this.
