Garbine Muguruza continues her U.S Open campaign on Thursday afternoon with a potentially tricky third round clash against Magdalena Rybarikova. Muguruza has stormed through her first two matches at Flushing Meadows in straight sets and continues to be the form player on tour at the moment. Rybarikova also brings good form into this matches after a pair of straight set wins over tough opponents. Rybarikova has twice beaten Muguruza but their most recent match at the semi-final stage at Wimbledon earlier this year ended in a 6-1 6-1 demolition in the Spaniard’s favour.

Muguruza has dropped just 7 games in her opening two matches in New York, a 6-0 6-3 win over Varvara Lepchenko and a 6-4 6-0 win over Ying-Ying Duan. Muguruza is in the best form of her career, ever since Wimbledon the Spaniard has been the best player on tour and has now won 18 of her last 20 matches. Rybarikova’s form has also reserved since Wimbledon where she reached the semi-finals. The Slovakian started her campaign in New York with a 6-3 6-4 win over Camila Giorgi before battling past Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 7-6.

As mentioned above, it was Muguruza that defeated Rybarikova at the semi-final stage at Wimbledon earlier this year in what was their most recent match. Muguruza completely dominated Rybarikova in that match, totally overpower Rybarikova. I suspect this match will be closer but ultimately Muguruza should again be too strong. The Spaniard is supremely confident and focused right now and if she executes her game there will be little Rybarikova can do to stop Muguruza.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Magdalena Rybarikova in 2 sets
