First up on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday will be Petra Kvitova and Caroline Garcia in what looms as an exciting third round clash at Flushing Meadows. This is a dynamic match-up between two exciting, powerful players. The head-to-head record coming into this match is level at 2 wins apiece, interestingly it has been the Frenchwoman who won their two most recent matches. Garcia has been more consistent than ever in recent times, whilst Kvitova’s form has been typically erratic, Garcia will fancy her chances of a third consecutive win over Kvitova.

Petra Kvitova has advanced to the third round in New York without dropping a set. Kvitova started the event with a 7-5 7-5 win over Jelena Jankovic before producing a much improved performance to cruise past Alize Cornet 6-1 6-2. Caroline Garcia rocketed through her opening match, beating Tereza Martincova 6-0 6-1 before coming from behind to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6 6-3 6-0. Both players will enter this third round match feeling confident after a couple of good wins.

The most recent match between the pair was last year at the Fed Cup Final, Garcia claimed a shock 7-6 6-3 win. Prior to that, Garcia won 7-5 4-6 6-2 in Cincinnati in 2016. I think Garcia will make it three wins in a row with a victory in New York on Thursday. Kvitova’s fitness is still an issue and Garcia has the weapons and skills to trouble Kvitova which was evident in their previous matches. It is Garcia who is the more reliable player heading into this match. The conditions in New York have never really suited Kvitova, they seemingly suit Garcia very well, expect the Frenchwoman to outlast Petra here.

Prediction: Caroline Garcia to defeat Petra Kvitova in 3 sets
