US Open, 🇺🇸🍎🗽🚕 R4 Preview + Prediction:
(3) 🇪🇸 Garbine Muguruza vs (13) 🇨🇿 Petra Kvitova
Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova have both strolled into the second week in New York without dropping a set. Muguruza is the form player on the tour at the moment but will face her biggest test of the tournament thus far when she comes up against a resurgent Petra Kvitova on Sunday. Muguruza will be the favourite heading into this match but Kvitova has won the last two matches between the pair and is always dangerous once she reaches the later stages of a big event. This should be an exciting contest.
Muguruza has been the most impressive player thus far In New York. The reigning Wimbledon champion has dropped just 9 games in her opening 3 matches which included commanding wins over Varvara Lepchenko, Ying-Ying Duan and Magdalena Rybarikova. Petra Kvitova will be a big step up in opposition for Muguruza and will give a better indication of her chances of winning the tournament. Petra Kvitova has also been very impressive this week, defeating Jelena Jankovic and Alize Cornet in straight sets before claiming a 6-0 6-4 win over an in-form Caroline Garcia to secure her spot in the second week.
I have to side with Muguruza here. The Spaniard is the much more reliable player heading into this match. Kvitova has played well this week but it does feel like her level could drop away at any moment given her questionable fitness level. Kvitova does lead the h2h series 2-1 but I think this is a good match-up for Muguruza who has improved dramatically since their most recent match. Kvitova shots swing nicely into the solid backhand side of Muguruza, the Spaniard has a great record against lefties and is playing with extreme confidence at the moment. Expect Muguruza to make a statement here and claim another commanding win.
