Venus Williams vs Sloane Stephens, U.S Open SF Preview

US Open, πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŽπŸ—½πŸš• Semi-Final Preview + Prediction:
SF #1: (9) πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Venus Williams vs πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Sloane Stephens

Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens will go head-to-head for a spot in U.S Open final when they do battle on Friday at Flushing Meadows. This will be a battle of the generations, the evergreen, 37-year-old Venus Williams up against the rising, 24-year-old Sloane Stephens. Venus and Sloane both confirmed their spot in the semi-finals with epic victories on Tuesday, both emerged victories in dramatic final set tiebreaks. Venus will be aiming to reach her third Grand Slam final of 2017 and hopefully go on to win her first major since 2008. Conversely, Sloane Stephens will be aiming to reach her first Grand Slam final and potentially a first major title. This looms as a fairly even match-up, another classic match could be on the cards on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Venus Williams is having the most incredible season. 2017 is the first year that Venus has made three Grand Slam semi-finals since 2002. Venus has come through multiple tough matches on route to this stage. In the first week, Venus survived a surprising three set scare against Viktoria Kuzmova before safely moving past Oceane Dodin and Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Venus has stepped up her level in the second week to come past two difficult opponent in three sets. In the fourth round, Venus produced an awesome final set to beat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 3-6 6-1.

Venus secured her spot in a third Grand Slam semi-final of the year with an epic 6-3 3-6 7-6 win over Petra Kvitova. Venus remained amazingly composed throughout the final two sets as she weathered the storm that was peak Petra Kvitova. It seemed like Petra would run away with the match midway through the third set when she went up a break and continually fought off break points. However, Venus eventually leveledΒ the match and was the far more composed player in the final set tiebreak.

Sloane Stephens has had a very challenging run to the semi-finals in New York, her second career Grand Slam semi-final, her first since her breakthrough run to the final four at the Australian Open in 2013. Sloane got through the first week in New York with a straight set win over Roberta Vinci, a huge three set win over Dominika Cibulkova and a straight set win over Ashleigh Barty. Like Venus, Stephens has also fought through two tough three set matches in a row to reach the semi-final stage.

Sloane hasn’t necessarily been at her best in her last couple of matches but has found a way to fight through tough situations. In the fourth round, Sloane won a topsy-turvy three set match against Julia Goerges before securing her spot in a maiden U.S Open semi-final with a 6-3 3-6 7-6 win over Anastasija Sevastova. Stephens was under huge pressure in the final set against Sevastova, when she trailed by a break and had break points against to go down a double break. Sloane regrouped and played smart tennis towards the end of the match as her superior firepower was ultimately too much for Sevastova to handle.

Sloane Stephens won the only previous match between the pair, a 7-6 6-1 victory in the opening round at Roland Garros in 2015. Much has changed since then, these two have taken completely different pathways since then but have both risen to the top in New York over the last few weeks.

I’m going to give the slight edge to Venus Williams in this match. Venus has been at this stage so many times over her career and numerous times in 2017. Venus seems to save her best tennis for the big moments and is difficult to defeat in these types of matches. I think Sloane has the game to make this match very competitive, Sloane’s great movement will lead to many extended rallies where Sloane can have success. Ultimately, it is Venus who plays with a greater clarity and is better at working out what she needs to do under pressure. With one final chance to win a Grand Slam in 2017, I think Venus Williams will take her game to another level and edge past a gallant Sloane Stephens.

Prediction: Venus Williams to defeat Sloane Stephens in 3 sets

  1. Venus. Ppl are saying in 3 but I’m thinking in 2. But I’m hoping in 3 lol. Good call on Kev. Dam was just taking it too safe. I got PCB to beat Kev πŸ’ͺ

    1. Cheers, I think Sloane will challenge Venus. It is unlikely to be an easy match. Thanks. I highly doubt Pablo can beat Anderson, as much as i’d love to see it happen (i’m a big fan of Pablo). He just doesn’t have the weapons on this surface. Anderson should be too strong

    2. Pieman, from where you got, “PCB to beat Kev”?

Are you seriously betting on PCB or casually picking some player(PCB) for fun, which anyone can do? Picking 1 of the 2 players randomly is very easy for even a kid!

Backup your pick with strong, factual and believable logic…without which it is of no use to anybody….even yourself(as you can lose a lot of money)!lol

I agree with wtaaddictcom’s pick/logic…that is Venus and Kevin to win. If Venus can play error free, she can win 2-0 also. But leaning on the over here like sweetstan predicted besides a Venus win (just too much experience and power…to put it in a nutshell!).

Kevin is leading PCB in the H2H 2:0 for a reason. Reason correctly given by wtaaddictcom below. Just like that, Kevin can win 3-0 in the SF’s. +2.5 PCB can also fail! Over can hit as PCB is playing well (but not banking on it)…but there is a big BUT here! PCB has played only weak opponents and none so big, strong and pumped/motivated to win….like “The Big Dirty South African Wild Bird” Kevin! Kevin besides overwhelming power has great court movement for a 6’8″ giant and many weapons( Big serve, Big FH, drop shots etc.) to destroy PCB! Kevin ML and -1 to -4 might be safe winners! All, do own research before betting.

      1. Jaya.
I picked PCB coz his returning well, and has taken out some NOT “weak” opponents. Opponents who beat “strong” players / big servers, just like anderson, i.e Diego beat cilic, pouille.
PCB beat “shapovalov”, who took out tsonga.
Hd2Hd Cilic owns anderson 6-1 Tsonga 3-0 vs Kev.
They are all big servers. The most recent PCB vs anderson game PCB was coming back from injury so thats just a warm up, he just came back.
As you know anything can happen, just look how heavy fav fed was vs del potro.
PCB’s second serve point won, i think, will be the diff.
PCB in 5 Come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!! (reverse duck bill)

  2. Venus to win & over 21.5 games.
Venus to win in 3 sets or 2 tight sets.

4 of V. Williams last 5 matches in USO have gone over 21.5 games and S. Stephens is better than some of this players but sometimes this stat fail but i don’t think it will.

    V. Williams better win because S. Stephens can be dangerous when she is serious.

I posted a comment on a different article and all my research point to K. Anderson winning but i might give P. Carreno Plus 2.5 sets in 1 slip & Plus 1.5 sets in another.

Giving a player Plus 2.5 sets simply means if they win 1 set that is if they lose in 4 sets or 5 sets you win, if they win the match you win but if the lose in 3 sets you lose.
If pablo wins 1 set plus 2.5 sets it is =3.5 sets, 3.5 sets is greater than 3 sets.

Plus 1.5 sets he needs to win 2 sets even if he loses in 5 sets you still win.

On a different slip i will pick K. Anderson to win & over games in other to increase the odds.
Giving Pablo Carreno Plus 2.5 sets or 1.5 sets and picking K. Anderson to win(money line or with over games) does not entirely contradict this pick because if Kevin wins in 4 or 5 sets both bets will be successful.

Having said that, i am not done looking into this match, one thing that troubles me is P. Carreno has improved on hard court and he hasn’t lost a set.

    1. I agree that Venus will win and likely over 21.5 games.. I think Sloane is likely to win or a set or as you said it will be two very close sets. I don’t see Venus winning this match easily, Sloane is playing too well for that.

I agree that PCB has improved on hard courts but the level of opposition he has played this tournament were all well below the standard of Kevin Anderson. Anderson is in great form at the moment and his serve is on fire. Carreno Busta will struggle to keep up with Anderson because he just will not have as many easy service points. One break of serve will be enough for Anderson in each set. Anderson should win, possibly in 3

    1. Who says Carreno Busta has a good return? I am a big fan of PCB but i can honestly see that this is a terrible match-up for him on this surface. The only way he has a chance is if Anderson plays poorly.

  3. Technically, this match can go either way. However, Venus experience in this kind of big moment may prevail her through to the final. Sloane can break down anytime like she did in the QF. She was lucky because Sevastova was a break down girl too..but not Venus.

    1. kickass, that was a kickass analysis.

You got a point there. Feel the same.

Venus should win 2-0 but maybe 2 tight sets. If Venus is in a demolition mode and Sloan can’t even kick-start and is in an error mode then venus can kickass sloan in 2 easy sets also!lol

What other matches are your kicking ass today?lol Seriously.

  4. Slaone s serve is worrying , it used to be a weapon and it has become v average.
She serves about 150kmh avg 1st serve in this tournament over 5 matches. She used to serve about 165-170 kmh avg on 1st serve…

    1. he got through despite some very poor serving at times, she didn’t need to rely on her serve much as Venus didn’t wasn’t sharp enough to consistently punish her.

        1. Yes, I’m fine. Just a busy day! Writing a preview for the final right now..

Such a shame Venus couldn’t end that. It really seemed like she was going to win until Stephens played unbelievably well in the last few games, never seen her play that well

  5. 1) V. Williams to win.
    2) Coco Vandeweghe to win.
    3) P. Carreno( I am not sure), maybe K. Anderson to win & P. Carreno Plus 2.5 sets, over games can hit as this match is not a 3 setter, maybe 4 or 5 sets.
    4) Juan Martin Del potro to win but I am not 100% sure cos Rafito is good but I will pick Del potro.

    1. I highly doubt Carreno Busta will win but I would like to see it

I agree with the Del Potro upset, good chance.. But Rafa is Rafa, hmm

  6. Sloane Stephens is crushing Venus in the first set, boy oh boy!
I hope V. Williams recovers, i am not watching the match just following it online.

1st set just finished 1-6 S. Stephens won it.
