(9) Ana Ivanovic vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Just one day after claiming her fourth title of the year in Tokyo, Ana Ivanovic faces Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first Round of the Wuhan Open on Monday.
Ana Ivanovic had a stunning run in Tokyo, winning all four of her matches in straight sets. Each of Ivanovic’s victories came over difficult opponents (Azarenka, Safarova, Kerber and finally Wozniacki). Ivanovic was particularly impressive in her victory over Caroline Wozniacki, Ivanovic stormed through the opening set, winning 16 straight points to take the opening set 6-2. Wozniacki seriously challenged Ivanovic in the second set and looked set to force the final into a third set. However Ivanovic raised her level, particularly in the tiebreaker to close out the match in straight sets. The Serb’s victory means she has now won a title on all four surfaces this season.
Ever since her tournament victory at the Paris Indoors earlier this year, Pavlyuchenkova has had an extremely disappointing season. In her last couple of tournaments Pavlyuchenkova has shown some signs that she may be on the verge of turning things around but she will need to overcome an extremely poor record against the Serb if she is to advance to the second round in Wuhan.
Ana Ivanovic has a perfect 6-0 head to head record over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Given Ana’s extremely short turnaround after winning the title in Tokyo, the Serb will be vulnerable. I like Pavlyuchenkova’s chances of causing an upset here.
Prediction: Pavlyuchenkova to defeat Ana Ivanovic in 3 sets
