WTA Finals Singapore, Red group match prediction
🇩🇪 (1) Angelique Kerber vs. 🇺🇸 (5) Sloane Stephens
A blockbuster match ends the group stage proceedings in Singapore as Angelique Kerber takes on Sloane Stephens. Kerber and Stephens are both in strong positions to progress to the next stage heading into this match and will both be keen to claim victory here. Expect a very physical match between two of the quickest players on tour.
I’m going to side with Sloane Stephens here. In a match-up that should feature a lot of lengthy rallies on fairly slow surface, it is Stephens who is seemingly suited by this situation. Firstly, Stephens holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Kerber and has won their last 4 matches in straight sets. Secondly, Kerber was seemingly struggling with a back injury in her last match with Osaka, a bad sign heading into a match like this. Kerber’s serve looks very vulnerable right now, Stephens will make Kerber work for every service game whilst Stephens is likely to win more free points on serve. Stephens looks to be in better physical shape heading into this match and has played the better tennis of the two so far this week. When Stephens played Kerber on slow hard court in Miami earlier this year Stephens won easily 6-1 6-2. All signs point to a Stephens win.
