🇦🇺 Australian Open, Semi-Final Prediction
🇨🇿 (8) Petra Kvitova vs. 🇺🇸 Danielle Collins
Petra Kvitova is a strong favourite to reach her first Australian Open final on Thursday when she takes on America’s Danielle Collins at the semi-final stage at Melbourne Park. Kvitova has made an outstanding start to the tournament and has been in damaging form throughout the tournament. I expect Kvitova to be too strong for Collins, there are a number of reasons that suggest Kvitova will be too good here.
Firstly, Kvitova is far more experienced at this level. Kvitova is a two-time former Grand Slam champion and is no stranger to the big stage. Kvitova is no stranger to the big stage having regularly reached the second of Grand Slam events. One look at Kvitova’s record in finals will prove that she thrives on the big stage. Kvitova has a 26/7 W/L record in finals, whilst this isn’t a final, it is still a factor as this is a big match. Collins had never even won a Grand Slam main draw match before this tournament, a huge gulf in class.
Secondly, the match-up favours Kvitova. Whilst the pair did contest a very close match a few weeks ago in Brisbane in match that lasted over 3 hours, the competitiveness of that match is misguiding. Kvitova was playing her first match of the year and was very rusty whilst Collins herself admitted that she played one of her best matches ever on that day and still lost. Kvitova will play much, much better this time around and that spells trouble for Collins.
This match-up is all about Kvitova. Kvitova serves better, returns better, has more power from the baseline and is more competent at the net. The only thing Collins has over Kvitova is defensive skills. Collins is not as dangerous when she is pushed back behind the baseline, that’s what Pavlyuchenkova did to her in the first set in the quarter-finals and it is what Kvitova will do here. Kvitova is playing incredibly well at the moment and shouldn’t have too many issues hitting through Collins to reach the final in Melbourne.
