The two best players on the WTA tour right now will go head-to-head in an epic finale at Melbourne Park on Saturday as Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova do battle for the first time. This is one of the most eagerly anticipated Grand Slam finals in recent times, a match-up that sees two Grand Slam champions with powerful, aggressive games collide with the world number 1 ranking also up for grabs. Both are playing to reach number 1 in the world for the first time.

This is a very tough match to predict, I’m going to stick with my original instincts and side with Petra Kvitova. The former Wimbledon champion has been in devastating form all tournament and has an amazing record in finals having won her last 8 finals. Osaka’s form is also impressive but she has shown more vulnerabilities than Kvitova to this stage of the tournament. Kvitova has been more consistent in her matches and is more experienced on the biggest of stages.

This will be a first strike battle. Don’t expect many long rallies. Osaka and Kvitova are two of the most powerful players on tour, both will look to gain control of points as quickly as possible. I don’t think there will be many breaks of serve in this match-up, the margins are going to be very small. One point of difference is that Kvitova is more competent at the net and is much more willing to come to the net, this could be crucial. Kvitova also has slightly more versatility to her baseline game and can potentially expose the Osaka forehand with her quick, flat groundstrokes.

Kvitova has seemingly been working towards this moment for years, it is her time to step up and win another Grand Slam and become world number 1 for the first time, it’s all very fitting.

Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Naomi Osaka in 3 sets
