🇦🇺 Australian Open, Quarter-Final Prediction
🇷🇺 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. 🇺🇸 Danielle Collins
The only quarter-final clash at the 2019 Australian Open to feature 2 unseeded players will see Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Danielle Collins go head-to-head for the first time with a spot in a maiden Grand Slam semi-final the prize for the winner. Pavlyuchenkova and Collins have both defied the odds on several occasions to reach this stage of the tournament. Neither can enjoy the freedom of underdog status here, the pressure is on, both will know that this is an extremely rare opportunity.
I’m going to side with Pavlyuchenkova here. Granted, Collins is in fine form. However, Pavlyuchenkova is far more experienced on the big stage. Especially at Grand Slams. Pavlyuchenkova has already reached the quarter-final stage at each Grand Slam, this is her fifth chance to reach a Grand Slam semi-final, the best one yet. Collins had never even won a Grand Slam main draw match before this event, eventually the fairy tale run will come to an end for the American, probably here.
Collins is dangerous when she is given time, Pavlyuchenkova has the game to take time away from Collins and deny the American the chance to play her game. Pavlyuchenkova’s heavy game will likely push Collins back off her baseline and put her into positions where she is not as dangerous. Pavlyuchenkova’s willingness to move up the court will also work in her favour in this match-up. I expect Pavlyuchenkova to be to strong here as she should win the first-strike battle, she has a more damaging serve and return of serve.
Prediction: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to defeat Danielle Collins in 3 sets
