Quarter-Final #4 – Elina Svitolina vs (7) Angelique Kerber
The inaugural Wuhan Open has been rocked by a series of stunning upsets and numerous retirements. Maria Sharapova became the latest causality on Wednesday, falling to qualifier Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets 6-7 5-7. Among all the upsets Angleique Kerber and Petra Kvitova have navigated their way through to the quarter-final stage. Angelique Kerber currently sits in 9th position in the race to Singapore standings; her first title of the season would significantly bolster her chances of qualification. Angie has a great opportunity to reach the semi-finals in Wuhan on Thursday when she comes up against Elina Svitolina.
Elina Svitolina reached the quarter-final stage courtesy of Garbine Muguruza withdrawing from their third round match due to a viral illness. Svitolina has already had two impressive victories this week in Wuhan. In the second round Svitolina quickly found herself trailing Sabine Lisicki 0-5 in just 13 minutes. Elina somehow managed to turn things around to take the opening set 7-6 before going on to win the second set 6-3.
Angelique Kerber reached the quarter-finals in Wuhan with a comprehensive 6-1 6-1 demolition of Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Kerber was forced to work much harder for her second round victory over Zarina Diyas. Kerber found herself down an early break in the deciding set but quickly turned things around to take the third set 6-4. Angie will be full of confidence heading into this match, the German defeated Svitolina in straight sets last week in Tokyo.
Kerber has a perfect 2-0 head to head record over Elina Svitolina; Kerber defeated Svitolina 6-4 6-4 last week in Tokyo. This is an important match for Angie; she can’t afford to drop this match if she wants to qualify for the tour ending finals in Tokyo. Angie should come through this match in straight sets
