Quarter-Final #3 Caroline Garcia vs (3) Petra Kvitova
The fact that Petra Kvitova has been the most reliable top seed in Wuhan this week shows just how whacky the results have been thus far at the inaugural event. In the quarter-finals Petra faces this weeks surprise package, Caroline Garcia.
Petra advanced to the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 6-3 2-6 6-4 victory over rising star and compatriot Karolina Pliskova. Kvitova started the match off on fire, bolting through the opening set with ease. Pliskova turned things around in the second set; her powerful game was on display as she took the second set 6-2 to force the match into a decider. The third was tight, however it was Kvitova who was always one step ahead. Another couple of victories for the Wimbledon champion will confirm her spot at the WTA finals in Singapore.
Caroline Garcia advanced through to the quarter-finals by producing three consecutive upset victories. The Frenchwoman’s first two victories were particularly impressive, Garcia just edged past Venus Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska both in a third set tiebreaker. Garcia looked down and out in both matches but showed impressive resolve to turn both matches around. Garcia’s aggressive returning was one of the most noteworthy aspects of both victories. Garcia will not have as many opportunities to step up and be aggressive when she faces Petra Kvitova on Thursday for a spot in the Semi-Finals in Wuhan.
This will be the very first meeting between the pair, it promises to be a fascinating encounter. The fast surface in Wuhan really suits Kvitova’s game, she will be very difficult to defeat. Garcia has had a great run in Wuhan, however her run is likely to end on Thursday when she comes up against the world number 3.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Caroline Garcia in 2 sets
