Angelique Kerber vs Annika Beck, Australian Open R4 Preview

Australian Open R4: (7) Angelique Kerber vs Annika Beck

Monday’s opening match on Rod Laver Arena will be an all-German affair when Angelique Kerber comes up against Annika Beck for a spot in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. Both Angie and Annika will enter this match full of confidence after two crushing victories in their two most recent matches, both will be aiming to reach the quarter-final stage at Melbourne Park for the very first time.

Angelique Kerber seems to be getting better and better with every match at Melbourne Park. The German started the week with a scrappy three set victory over Misaki Doi, the German faced match point late in the second set but ultimately pulled through to claim a gutsy 6-7 7-6 6-3 victory. Angie has been untroubled since that first round scare, recording comfortable straight set victories over Alexandra Dulgheru and Madison Brengle. Angie has now reached the fourth round stage in Melbourne on three occasions and will see this match as the perfect opportunity to finally reach the quarter-final stage of the event.

Annika Beck is having a wonderful week in Melbourne, reaching the second week of a Grand Slam for the very first time courtesy of three commanding straight set victories. The German has barely been challenged in any of her matches this week, taking advantage of a reasonably favourable draw. Annika started the week with a thumping victory over Priscilla Hon before recording a 6-2 6-3 victory over Timea Bacsinszky. Beck booked her spot in the fourth round by defeating compatriot Laura Siegemund 6-0 6-4. Beck will enter this fourth round clash with absolutely nothing to lose and will see this a great opportunity to record a significant victory.

This will be the first career meeting between and Angie and Annika but I’m sure these two will know quite a lot about each other given how close the German girls are with each other.

This could actually be a pretty close match, these two are pretty similar in many way, both are very competent from the baseline and great movers so many long rallies can be expected. Angie is certainly far more experienced in bigger matches and will have the psychological edge over Beck being the undisputed number 1 German in the world. There is likely to be some challenging moments for Angie in this match but ultimately she should be too classy for Beck.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Annika Beck in 3 sets
