Day three saw contenders Petra Kvitova and Agnieszka Radwanska strengthen their muscles in dominant straight set victories. A rusty Victoria Azarenka became the first real big name to fall, going down to Bojana Jovanovski in a tight three set match. Day four looks to be fairly straightforward as we all know Wimbledon always throws up some surprise results.
(11) Ana Ivanovic vs Jie Zheng
Ana Ivanovic was less than convincing in her opening round victory over Francesca Schiavone and will need to raise her level in the second round when she comes up against China’s Jie Zheng. Both ladies had good results in the lead up to Wimbledon. Ivanvoic won her first grass court title in Birmingham whilst Jie Zheng made the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Jie Zheng is always dangerous on grass, her flat groundstrokes are particularly troublesome on this surface.
The two have met on four previous occasions, the head to head is split at 2-2. In 2008 Jie Zheng defeated Ivanovic in their only previous meeting on grass at Wimbledon. Ivanovic has been very consistent this year and will be determined to do well in London after a disappointing loss to Lucie Safarova in Paris. Zheng has had a very disappointing year, however her recent results confirm she is most dangerous on grass. Ana should be too strong for Zheng but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zheng take a set off the Serb.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic to defeat Jie Zheng 6-3 5-7 6-1
(9) Angelique Kerber vs Heather Watson
Local hopeful Heather Watson faces a formidable challenge in the form of Angelique Kerber in the second round in London. Kerber, a former a semi-finalist was solid in her first round victory over Urszula Radwanska. Watson was equally impressive in her straight set win over Ajla Tomljanovic.
Angie had a great week in Eastbourne, with impressive victories over Cornet, Makarova and Wozniacki but she eventually lost in a tight final to Madison Keys. Watson also played some good tennis in Eastbourne before eventually losing to Madison Keys in the semi-finals. This will be the first time these two will come up against each other on tour. I suspect Kerber will be too solid for Watson, The brit doesn’t really possess any weapons too hurt the German. Kerber will be too strong on the baseline for Watson.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Heather Watson 6-4 6-2
(25) Alize Cornet vs Petra Cetkovska
The ever entertaining Alize Cornet faces a real threat in the second round when she comes up against Petra Cetkovska. Cornet came from a set down to defeat Ana Schmiedlova in her opening round match. There was some typical Cornet drama, the frenchwoman suffered a blood nose during her opening set lose. Cetkovska also just snuck through her opening round match against Jovana Jaksic 7-5 in the third set.
I think it’s fair to say that grass is Cornet’s weakest surface whilst grass is probably the surface Cetkovska is most dangerous on. Cetkovska has reminded us what she is capable this year, most notably in her victory over Li Na in Dubai. The Czech had a good run at Wimbledon last year, coming through qualifiers before beating Wozniacki in the second round but eventually fell to Sloane Stephens in a tight third round match. This should be a really close match, for me it’s the toughest of the day to call. The key to this match will be who can step up and be more aggressive. For this reason I think Cetkovska will come through victorious. The Czech is more capable of playing effective aggressive tennis.
Prediction: Petra Cetkovska to defeat Alize Cornet 7-5 3-6 6-4
