(3) Eugenie Bouchard vs Sam Stosur
The highlight of Wednesday’s schedule at the Connecticut Open sees third seed Eugenie Bouchard take on 2011 U.S Open champion Sam Stosur. This promises to be a tight battle with both ladies desperate for momentum heading into the U.S Open next week.
Genie’s comprehensive 6-1 6-1 first round victory over Bojana Jovanovski on Monday was the Canadian’s first win since reaching the Wimbledon final. A promising victory for Bouchard who came into this event under a fair bit of pressure on the back of consecutive first round loses to Shelby Rogers and Svetlana Kuznetsova. A meeting with Sam Stosur on Wednesday will present a much greater challenge for the Canadian.
Sam Stosur was unlucky enough to draw Serena Williams in the second round in both Montreal and Cincinnati. Williams completely outplayed Stosur in Montreal, however their match in Cincinnati was much, much closer. Serena would still come out on top in straight sets but Stosur was able to push Williams into a tiebreaker in both sets and had a set point to force the match into a deciding set. Stosur began her Connecticut Open campaign with a hard-fought three set victory over Kurumi Nara. The former U.S Open champion plays some of her best tennis on the North American hard courts and will be looking for a strong showing in New York after her shock first round loss to Vicky Duval last year.
Stosur defeated Genie in their only previous completed match (not including the Hopman Cup). The victory came in last years Osaka Final, Stosur came from a set down to win 3-6 7-5 6-2. One thing that has been evident thing year is that Genie struggles to deal with opponents that hit with a lot of spin. Bouchard has twice lost Kuznetsova and once to Schiavone. I think this is a good matchup for Sam, if she serves as well as she did against Serna last week, she should be able to cause a mini upset here.
Prediction: Sam Stosur to defeat Eugenie Boucahrd in three sets
