Semi-Final #2 - (3) Petra Kvitova vs Elina Svitolina
Friday’s first semi-final sees third seed Petra Kvitova take on one of this weeks surprise packages, Elina Svitolina for a place in the final at the inaugural Wuhan Open.
After a disappointing first round exit at the US Open, Elina Svitolina has rebounded strongly, having one of her best weeks on tour at the first ever Wuhan Open. Svitolina came from 0-5 down in the opening set to defeat Sabine Lisicki 7-6 6-4 in the second round. However the Ukrainians most impressive victory came in the quarter-finals where she defected an agitated Angelique Kerber in straight sets 6-4 7-6. Svitolina matched Kerber from the baseline, hitting an impressive 31 winners to capture one of the greatest wins of her young career. Elina will have nothing to lose when she steps on to court for her semi-final clash with Petra Kvitova, which is always a dangerous prospect.
Amongst a sea of top seed causalities this week in Wuhan, Petra Kvitova has been refreshingly steady. The Czech rocketed past Karin Knapp in the opening round before surviving a tough three set battle against compatriot Karolina Pliskova in the third round. In the quarter-finals Petra proved too strong for Caroline Garcia who struggled to make inroads during the Czech’s service games. Petra’s run to the semi-finals in Wuhan has all but assured herself a place at the upcoming WTA finals in Singapore. A few more wins will confirm the Wimbledon champions place at the season ending championships.
Elina Svitolina defeated Petra in their only previous meeting, which took place about a month a go in Cincinnati. Svitolina came out on top in straight sets 6-2 7-6. All the pressure is on Petra to turn that result around and reach the final in Wuhan. Svitolina has nothing to lose and will bring great confidence into this match having beaten Petra in Cincinnati and having beaten Kerber (another leftie) yesterday. I’m predicting the upsets to continue in Wuhan, with Svitolina coming out on top in three sets.
Prediction: Elina Svitolina to defeat Petra Kvitova in 3 sets
