(14) Sara Errani vs Sabine Lisicki
On Wednesday at the Western & Southern Open, Sara Errani will take on Sabine Lisicki for the second tournament in a row. the Italian will be desperate to avenge last weeks opening round loss to the German in Montreal. The complete contrast in styles between these two always makes for a fascinating affair.
Sara Errani has had a rather disappointing season thus far; her ranking continues to steadily slide. Sara’s performances on hard courts have been particularly disappointing, Sara has an 11-10 record on hard courts this season, progressing to the quarter-finals or better on two occasions (Doha and Paris). Sara scrapped past Yanina Wickmayer on Tuesday, 7-6 in the third. The match was filled with drama, the chair umpire made a terrible overrule which left Errani fuming.
Sabine has also had a rather disappointing season, however her form of late has been much more promising. Sabine reached the third round in Montréal, losing to eventual champion Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets. Sabine was in control of that match early in the third set but wild errors soon crept into her game as they so often do. Sabine advanced to the second round in Cincinnati with a three set victory over Roberta Vinci, a typically erratic performance.
The head-to-head between the two is split at 1 apiece. Sabine defeated Sara in Montreal last week 6-1 7-5 whilst Errani outclassed Sabine at last years French Open 6-0 6-4. Lisicki certainly poses the weapons to blast Errani off the court, just like she did in their first set last week in Montreal. However Errani has the ability to frustrate Sabine. The difference between Sabine's best and her worst is extreme, you just never know what the German is going to produce. On Wednesday I believe Sara will avenge her loss to Sabine in Montreal last week, her gutsy win over Wickmayer will give her confidence heading into this match.
Prediction: (14) Sara Errani to defeat Sabine Lisicki in three sets
