Quarter-Final - Venus Williams vs (14) Carla Suarez Navarro
Two unlikely quarter-finalists, Carla Suarez Navarro and Venus Williams will do battle on Friday for a place in the semi-finals at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Carla Suarez Navarro pulled off one of the biggest wins of her career and the upset of the tournament thus far to defeat fourth seed Maria Sharapova in three sets. Carla raced away to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and withstood a late fight back from Maria to take the set 6-2. The Spaniard led in the second set before rain halted play. Maria took advantage of the situation, coming from behind to take the second set. It would have been easy for Carla concede defeat at this point however the Spaniard kept fighting to take the third set 6-2. Cara defended particularly well, standing a good couple of meters behind the baseline and returning just about everything.
Venus Williams advanced to the final 8 with a gutsy three set victory over a determined Angelique Kerber. In what turned out to be one of the matches of the year, Venus played one of her better matches in recent years. Despite both ladies becoming quite fatigued, the quality of the rallies got and better and better as the match went on. After failing to serve out the match at 5-3, Venus regrouped to break Angie in an epic final game.
Carla has 2-1 head to head record over Venus Williams. The most reason meeting between the two was earlier this year in Rome, Carla proved to be too crafty for Venus on clay, prevailing 6-4 6-2. Carla famously shocked Venus Williams at the 2009 Australian Open, their only previous meeting on a hard court. Venus has played a lot of matches in the last week and a bit, given her ongoing health issues she may well be running on empty at the moment. Carla has also played two long matches in a row and it is always hard to regroup after a win like she had over Sharapova. This is a really tough match to call but I think Venus will prevail in two sets. If the match goes into a third, Carla is certainly the clear favourite.
Prediction: Venus Williams to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets
