Eastbourne delivered more high quality and highly competitive matches yesterday. The pick of the bunch was Kerber vs Cornet, where Kerber saved two match points before eventually defeating Alize Cornet to advance to the quarter-finals. Despite all the upsets there are a couple of great quarterfinal matches to look forward to on Friday in Eastbourne.
Quarterfinal #1 Ekaterina Makarova vs (5) Angelique Kerber
Angelique Kerber will come into this match with a sense of freedom, having survived two match points to battle past Cornet in one of the matches of the tournament thus far. Kerber came up with some stunning shots when it mattered most, refusing to give up when other would have thrown in the towel. Ekaterina Makarova had a relatively straightforward victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to reach the quarterfinals of a premier event for the first time since New Haven.
Kerber and Makarova have a lengthy history, having played each other on eight previous occasions, the head-to-head is squared a 4-4. Both ladies are quite comfortable on grass where they have met on four previous occasions, once again the head-to-head is even at 2-2. Kerber won their most recent encounter, a tough three set battle in Miami. I think Kerber has the edge in this match, she hasn't been able to gain much momentum of late and will be determined to win this match. She can also play with a little more freedom knowing she dodged a bullet against Cornet. Makarova is certainly capable but it is Kerber who is more solid and consistent.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Ekaterina Makarova 7-5 3-6 6-2
Quarterfinal #2 (8) Caroline Wozniacki vs Camila Giorgi
It is delightful to see Caroline Wozniacki string a couple of wins together after what has been a tumultuous couple of weeks for the Dane. Wozniacki has had two very solid straight set victories over Sam Stosur and Sloane Stephens. Her opponent, Camila Giorgi is continuing to rise, after an epic victory over Victoria Azarenka in the opening round the Italian backed her upset victory by defeating Johanna Konta in another tight three set match.
Giorgi famously defeated Wozniacki at last years U.S Open, announcing herself to the tennis world. This was a really disappointing loss for Wozniacki and she will be after a little bit of revenge here. Although Giorgi has had two good wins she has been very inconsistent in both matches especially against Azarenka where she served a whopping 17 double faults. Giorgi is the type of player Wozniacki has made a habit of losing against however I think the Dane is in good playing well at the moment and enjoys playing in Eastbourne. Wozniacki will be too solid on this occasion.
Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Camila Giorgi 6-4 6-2
Other Match Predictions:
(2) Petra Kvitova to defeat Heather Watson in straight sets
Madison Keys to defeat Lauren Davis in three sets
I managed to pick 7 of 8 quarter-finalists, hopefully my good form will continue 😉
